The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the USA. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500, in the country of USA. Starting from John Adams since 1800, every USA president has resided in this dwelling.
The term White House was often used as the metonym for the president and for his advisers. The residence was designed by the Irish-born architect James Hoban. The creation of White House was done in the neoclassical style.
Hoban modeled the White House building on the “Leinster House” in Dublin, in the country of Republic of Ireland. The Leinster House today contains the Oireachtas and the Irish legislature.
The Historical Monument White House construction took place between the year 1792 and 1800. Aquia Creek sandstone was used in the construction, which was painted in white.
3rd USA President “Thomas Jefferson” moved into the White House in the year 1801.
In 24th August 1814, during the war between the USA & England, British troops entered into the Washington, D.C. & burned the White House.
This attack was in retaliation for the June 1813 American attack on the city of York, Ontario, Canada.
Reconstruction began immediately after the White House was burned by the British in 1814. In 1817, 5th USA President “James Monroe” moved into the semi-reconstructed Executive Residence.
In 1824, the exterior construction of the White House continued and the semi-circular South Portico was added. In 1829, North Portico was added.
The modern complex includes several buildings like “The Executive Residence, The East Wing, The West Wing, The Eisenhower Executive Office Building, the Blair House, and a guest residence.
The Executive Residence is of 6 floors. The Ground Floor, State Floor, Second Floor and Third Floor are included. Additionally there is a 2-story basement.
The White House property is a National Heritage Site. It is a constituent of the President’s Park.
White House ranked 2nd American Institute of Architects list of American’s Favorite Architecture.
The White House Complex was protected by the United States Secret Service and by the United States Park Police. During the presidential inauguration in the year 2005 the NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) units are used to the patrol the airspace had over the Washington, D.C.
Now also, the same NASAMS units are used since to protect the President. All aircraft around the White House and its airspace is strictly prohibited.
In February 1974, a stolen U.S. Army helicopter landed on the White House grounds without authorization.
20 years later, in 1994, a light plane flown by an American Truck driver “Frank Eugene Corder” crashed on the White House grounds. In that time, he died instantly. After that, White House security began to regulate air traffic in White House.
In the time of 42nd USA President Bill Clinton, in 1995, The United States Secret Service has closed off Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House to vehicular traffic due to security reasons.
